I went with the nightforce shv, around $1400 for a 5-20x56, and I was told that they use the same glass as the more expensive nightforce scopes.

My range is marked, same place the fclass shoot, I honestly don't see why dialing in shoots via the turrets isn't the simplest method.

I got it at Grouse River about a year ago. I really like it so far.

Can you explain what you mean by dialling in shoots?

    Sorry, I meant Shots*
    What I do,
Pick your load and zero at 100yrds or whatever distance, and reset the turrets so they maintain zero but read 0.
Shoot at 200yrds, adjust the scope and record the clicks/moa change needed to be zero'd in a notebook.
Do the same for all known distances shooting. Ballistics calc usually keeps me on paper to start and fine tune.

So, your rifle at rest is always set for 100yrd zero.
If you end up at 500yrd, check notebook, adjust for the known clicks/moa change needed at that distance.
    Shoot.
Once done, do the reverse and set it back to 100yrd zero. For storage.

I have no idea if this is appropriate but it's what I do. Or try and do. My problem is I keep changing my reloads up and need to redo it over and over.

Have you thought of the swfa super sniper to hold you over untill you can afford a 2k level scope?

Have a look at this thread before you buy a Vortex Viper PST. Mine died, and I found out later that there are a LOT of other people who have had the same problems. It cost me a few trips to the range and a lot of running around, trying to figure out what the heck was going on with the rifle. Then the reticle finally let go all together. That part I didn't explain in the thread.

In the end, Vortex couldn't fix it, and they sent me a brand new one. I put it up for sale when I got it in the mail...brand new in the box, with 2 extra sun shades and 2 sets of scope caps. I wound up selling it for $1100, shipped. While I was waiting for it to come in the mail, I took a deep breath, puckered up the pucker hole, and went for a Nightforce NXS. Pay once, cry once, get a scope that you're 100% confident in and that will last you the rest of your life. In hind sight, I should have listened to the well known long range guys around here who were telling me to buy a Nightforce in the first place.

It's actually 100% your experience that has caused me to rethink the Vortex .

What are your thoughts on the SHX 5-20 x 56?
