    More 1 mile hits

    A friend and I spent the day at the Edson range today. I made hits at 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, and 1600 meters
There aren't any targets at 900 and we couldn't figure out if the second longest ones were 1400 or 1500, so I didn't waste the ammo....just jumped right to 1600. I originally thought I got 4, but I see in the pic that I actually grazed the top left corner, for a total of 5. Hey...I'm getting better at this long range thing.

Pretty cool, good shooting. I'm envious of your range, 100m is the maximum I can get here.

    Use smaller targets.

There are longer ranges than 100m in NS. Likely under a two hour drive from you. BSD isn't exactly driving around the corner to shoot.

So awesome, just curious, how many shots does it take you to get it on steel at that range? I've never shot anywhere near that far.

Not many and they are too expensive and regimented. MVRRC would be the only reasonably priced range. 2 hour drive for me but I'll likely join one of these years. Still it only goes to 400m, and NSRA is the longest at only 600m. There is nothing that comes close to where BSD was shooting.

Looks like you have that rifle dialed in Den. I'm waiting for ice to set up my target across the lake.

Oh...that would be lots. I honestly wasn't keeping track. I started off with around 120ish rounds of ammo and worked my way down the range. I finally got my dope for 1100, 1200, and 1300 too, so I was really happy with that. the first 20 rounds I fired were junk stuff that I didn't like the feel of when I was seating the bullets. They actually had a dent ring around the bullet from excessive pressure during seating. They still shot just fine as far as I was concerned. The last hundred were what I considered to be perfect. Let's say I shot somewhere between 20 and 30 rounds at the mile ???

I find the real problem with shooting that far is seeing if you've made a hit. The 22 power magnification in the scope, mixed with a little bit of heat mirage both coming off the barrel (we were running out of daylight) and some coming off the range, and its just a white shape with wiggling furry edges. Fortunately, we had my buddy's big spotting scope there, and we were able to make out that we were getting some hits...we thought we could see them at least. At the end of the day, we drove down to check the plate and paint it for the next guy. That's when we knew for sure. I'd say only about 10% of the time, you can pick out the dirt splash of your misses in the backstop. I swear, sometimes I wonder if the thing isn't made of sponge. LOL.

One thing I did notice was how much just a little bit of wind change, changes the game.
The first day I made hits at a mile, there was a light wind...maybe 5-7 km/h coming straight at us. I had 67.25 moa of elevation dialed in.
Yesterday, there was a light drifting breeze blowing away from us...maybe 2-3 km/h. I was using 60.75 moa of elevation.
If you ever get the chance, solidly mount a rifle with the scope dialed up to 22x power on an object that's a mile away, that you know the size of.....then move your elevation adjustment on the scope by 6.5 moa and see how much your point of aim has moved. Its a LOT.

Now, those winds were interpretations of it, up on the hill, inside the shelter. Looking at the flags as you go down range, they're pointing in different directions due to various ground effects....and there's no shortage of stuff at Edson to mess around with ground level wind. I don't pretend to know how to read wind well...far from it.....much less know how to take into account multiple wind direction changes throughout a bullet's flight to 1600 meters. I'm just not that good, and that's all there is to it. Maybe that's something that will come with more trigger time. The range is a 2 to 2.5 hour drive for me each way, so it'll never be something I can go out and do every weekend.
