    The right scope

I just purchaced a Mossberg 100 ATR .270 for deer and want to know what would be the best (with in reason) scope to mount on it? I was leaning towards 3-9x40 or 50 but not sure of a brand to use.

If you're just using it for hunting, a Bushnell Elite series will be fine. I've got a Redfield on my Browning BAR 300 win mag that has served me well. If you want to go to the next level, start looking at the lower end Leuopold stuff. What EVER you do, remember that if it has Tasco written on the box, it's not a scope. It's a hammer...and a crappy hammer at that.

    I highly recommend a leupold vx1
Around $250-$350, 3-9x40mm, good eye relief(budget vortex, on the other hand - is poor imo), good resale if upgrading.

so... is this an ad or a question. Should be moved if a question.

Look at a Vortex Diamondback 3X9. Bought one and am pleased with it.

Moved to the optics forum, since the OP is looking for advice not to buy or sell.

And BSD, do I need to infract you for non-sale related comments in the Marketplace?

I like the Bushnell Elites myself, good value for the dollar, I think I've owned three or four, still have two of them. The oldest one (a 3200) has rode on my heavy barrelled 308 for close to a decade and never needed a tweak outside of changing the ammo. Pretty good in low light and the crosshairs are a nice brassy colour that shows up well against dark brush. Oh, it's the 3-9x40, which has become the sorta 'all around' hunting scope of choice. Low enough magnification for up close, high enough magnification you can take a deer at a pretty fair range, and the 40mm objective is a reasonable blend of gathering enough light for dawn and dusk shooting while remaining reasonably low to the bore.

Honestly most of the scopes in the $300 to $400 range should suit basic hunting needs pretty well. The glass is starting to get noticeably better than the bargain basement Tascos and low end Bushnells, durability is improved, cross hair adjustment is mostly uniform (had an old steel Tasco, one click could mean anything from 1/8" to a full inch). A $2000 Zeiss they ain't, but for 95% of hunting they'll do the trick.

    Where do you hunt?

What's your reasonable distance? Weather? Do you care about size or weight? How much target practice do you get in?

Zeiss Terra scopes are in sale right now. Otherwise I'd go Bushnell.

I agree with kmo, even though the majority of scopes I own are Leupold.

The Elites have better light gathering and you will see better at dusk and dawn with an Elite over a Leupold VX1.

on the 40mm vs 50mm, have a read here:

on another note, having been given a BS infraction for pointing out a seller misrepresenting a caliber in a wts add, I think BSD should get an infraction. Fair is fair Den. Do the right thing, infract yourself!
