    Dangerous Game Rifles

So I've recently gotten it into my head that I *need* a seriously big, overpowered, dangerous game rifle. Why? Because they're gentlemanly (Roosevelt on the plains of Africa?), I'd like to hunt Africa some day, I love recoil, I have a small dink (y'all were thinkin' it, i'm admitting it), and I just plain want one.

This will be a long term project, something I'm gonna save up for. The thing is, I'm not entirely sure who the makers of such rifles are. I've gone through the sites of the big name guys (Remington, Ruger, Savage etc) and only Ruger has come up with something close.

I'd like either single shot or the old classic double rifle style. Budget would be $1000 - $2000 (since i plan to save for awhile). Minimum caliber .375H&H. Available factory ammo would be preferable as i don't reload yet.

    Suggestions to encourage my dream?
I'd rather make a difference than a dollar.

Not a shotgun! Double rifle. Elephant gun.

The easiest commercial solution is a Ruger #1 Tropical in .375 H+H or .416 Rigby.

The custom solution is taking an old hammer side by side shotgun and sleeving the barrels with rifled inserts. Of course, you'll probably need to spend some dollars on strengthening the action to handle the really big calibers unless you go with a large bore black powder cartridge. And you will want to reload for the black powder cartridge.

Edit: Here's a link for a book on building double guns on shotgun actions. http://www.bundukipublishing.com/doublerifle.htm

-Single shots aren't an appropriate choice for dangerous game. This is one case where you really want a quick second shot available.
-If you want a double rifle, your budget is too small.
-Start reloading! Components are expensive enough, let alone loaded ammo for these rifles. .375 H&H is the least expensive factory ammo, but will still cost you several dollars per shot.
-Controlled feed is preferable for bolt actions.

    Ruger African.

Your price range is very limited for a double........
You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You may not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first 2 things you are gonna do are 1) Call someone with a gun, and 2) Pray that they arrive quick enough to save you.

Take Mr Chamber's advice on the 458 win mag. It's a serious "thumper" and you can buy the cartridges without too much trouble.
