Similar to a cobbler's bench? But 99% of those seem to have a seat built in... The slate doesn't make a whole pile o' sense for that either.

It's even better when it's a mystery. This is the best thing I've found since the six foot tall Lego man in a dumpster behind a bankrupt toy store....

Could be one of three things.
Poor candy makers used slate and richer candy makers used marble.
Greenhouse potters used slate for a work bench, French slate potting table.
Silkscreen people use slate to mix inks for silk screening.
This could be a modern version of one of the above.

Driving by a place in Ont my friend sees an old tractor, grown over with grass.
He pulls in and asks the guy about - if you can get it out of there you can have it.
That evening he was driving it around his yard for the price of scrap.

I never got much from dumpster diving, but when I worked at the old school dump here
a guy came in and was throwing some books out. I went through them, and picked out a copy of white fang for myself.
I've read and reread that book countless times since then.
the wild still lingered in him and the wolf in him merely slept

I'm not allowed to go to the dump unsupervised.
I always come back with more than I took.

City council or whoever is in charge of the city dump here passed a bylaw making it illegal to remove anything from the city landfill. They even pay city workers to hang out and monitor it all day. Kind of ruins the "reduce, reuse, recycle" movement. Also one of the most ridiculous bylaws I have ever encountered. (And there are some doozies here). I have often seen bikes and various other things I could have used over the years.

Looks like some sort of cobblers bench. Very similar idea to this one:
