My grandfather was a commander of a Sherman tank and also did not like to talk about what he witnessed. I remember him talking about the war only 2 times and then only in general terms and nothing specific about his experiences.
I idolized that man right up until he passed away in 2010 (I still do) 3 weeks before his 102nd birthday.

Fort Drum - Also known as the Concrete Battleship

Part of the US defenses of Manila Bay. Fort Drum was the last of these fortresses to fall to Japanese occupation, and upon their return to the region, would be the last to fall to American forces. So prolonged was the bombardment of the fortress by the Japanese that by the time they took the island, all structures on the top had been blown off, and in some places concrete had been blasted away to depths of over 15 feet. When it came time for the Americans to remove the Japanese from the Fortress in 1945 they decided a different approach. They pumped Gasoline and Diesel through the vents and then lit it. It took 5 days for the fire to stop burning (the initial explosion lifted a 1 ton hatch 300 feet into the air). There was no one left alive when the US troops came back after those 5 days.
