The locksmith business my company owns sells a bunch of different knives, and I did a little test.
Short version: don't try to import a Victorinox RescueTool ( - even though it is designed for first responders and could save someone's life, it probably won't make it through customs. That being said, if a dealer sources it through the Canadian importer, you can buy it from them. Makes total sense, right?

CBSA applying new rules to all imported knives, not just assisted openers

This was sent to me, seems to be official.

Oh Canada? Customs Service ruling bans importation of most common folding knives

    by H. Clay Aalders |

Canada Border “Services” Agency has issued a ruling which is a de facto ban on the importation of most common folders. Basically, they will apply the infamous New York City “Flick-Test” to any imported knife, declaring any knife which can be opened with centrifugal force verboten. They are calling such horrible weapons “Centrifugal Knives”. New York City calls them “Gravity Knives”. I call them common folding knives, no different than the Spyderco Endura I carried in High School.
    From Canadian Border Services Agency:
Notification of Canadian International Trade Tribunal Decision on Centrifugal Opening Knives
    Customs Notice 18-01
    Ottawa, January 5, 2018
    Revised date – Ottawa, January 10, 2018

    1. This Notice is to advise interested parties that the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) has rendered a decision in Appeal No. AP-2017-012, T. LaPlante v. President of the Canada Border Services Agency regarding knives which open automatically by centrifugal force (centrifugal knives).

    2. In accordance with subsection 84(1) of the Criminal Code and the CITT’s recent decision in T. LaPlante, the CBSA resolves that centrifugal knives will be classified as prohibited weapons if the following conditions are met:
a knife has a blade that opens by centrifugal force, when the blade is released from the handle into the fully ejected and locked position with a simple and brisk outwardly flick of the wrist; and
it includes knives that require some preliminary or simultaneous minimal manipulation of either a flipper or other non-edged parts of the blade.

    3. Please be advised that the CBSA will immediately prohibit the importation of all knives by an individual that open as per the CITT’s decision. Importation by a business is permitted if a Firearms Business Licence has been presented with import – prohibited weapon, listed as a business activity on the licence. For more detailed information concerning the decision, please consult the decision posted on the Tribunal’s website at: CITT Appeal No. AP-2017-012.

    4. The CBSA’s policy on the importation of prohibited weapons is available in Memorandum D19-13-2, Importing and Exporting Firearms, Weapons and Devices. The Memoranda D19-13-2 will be revised to reflect the CITT decision on centrifugal opening knives.

The creeping reach of knife-Fascism has opened a new front on the shores of North America, just as it is being stamped out in the States. Despite setbacks in the courts and the feckless Governor Cuomo’s back-to-back vetoes of almost unanimously passed reform legislation, New York’s Gravity Knife ban is the exception rather than the rule. In most states, knife laws are getting more free, not less.

Unfortunately, there is not yet a Canadian equivalent of Knife Rights. Until one arises, I have no idea who will take up the torch to right this travesty.

Well, if we sit here and take it lying down, we have only ourselves to blame.
A lawyer who has fought (and won) the knife battles is willing to take this to court.
Are you willing to shell out a few bucks?

Would the ban include shaving straight razors?

So any updates? Or do I have to cross the border to buy knives now?

I've ordered some expensive folding knives from the US and from Japan. But not assisted openers. No problems so far. Just ordered another one yesterday. But perhaps customs didn't get their paws on them.

Sad to say the gofundme has stalled at about 10K. I don't know if the lawyer involved in this is still doing anything.

Not sure what happened with this as this is a old thread but I've purchased several knives recently from reputable stores in Canada since. If they can get them across....
