Been a while, still haven't made a decision. Have had other "projects" on the go. May go the remington 700 route in .308

Personally think Savage make a better gun and a Model 10 is a great gun.

No one mentioned Weatherby. The newer Vanguard in 223 has an improved twist rate to support a 55 gr bullet, and it won't be as hard on the wallet as some other options at similar quality point.

For the money, your best bet is savage... they shoot very well out of the box.

I love my Remmy 700 Tactical in .223. It's a ton of fun to shoot and highly accurate! I picked mine up used and couldn't be happier with the purchase.

I second the CZ527. All of their guns are disproportionately better than their competition at the same price range.

The 527 is the best $1000 223 bolt gun you can buy, the Shadow2 is the best $1300 9mm you can buy, etc.

I have a Savage 12FV in .223. An extremely accurate rifle but the barrel only lasted 2000 rounds.
I replaced it with a stainless Shilen 8" twist barrel. Its even more accurate now.

I have a CZ 527 Varmint laminate and it is also very accurate and well made.

If you are going to shoot longer distances you will want a 9" twist or faster.

I need to pick up a bolt action .223 myself. I've shot some tikkas in .223, they were pretty slick!
