Trudeau says he's 'listening' as Montreal mulls push for national handgun ban
City council will debate motion that calls on Ottawa to expand gun control laws

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government is listening to Toronto city council and now, possibly Montreal's, about stricter gun laws. (Olivier Matthys/Associated Press)
Montreal will consider pushing for a federal ban on handguns, by citing four instances of gun violence that have traumatized Quebecers over the past 30 years.

The motion, which will be debated at city hall next Monday, says Montreal needs to demand Ottawa ramp up the restrictions in its Bill C-71, tabled last March, by prohibiting civilians from possessing assault rifles and handguns.

It also asks that the federal government enhance its regulations surrounding all firearms so that "individuals who are clearly at risk" aren't able to own them.

The motion was presented by Alex Norris, the chair of the city's public security committee, and seconded by Nathalie Goulet, the executive committee member responsible for public security — both members of Mayor Valérie Plante's party.

"We don't see any reason for private individuals to be authorized to own such weapons," Norris told CBC News. "These are weapons that are principally designed to kill people."

Fourteen women were killed at École Polytechnique in 1989. The event is remembered every year in Montreal on December 6. (Ryan Remiorz/Canadian Press)

The motion cites the Polytechnique massacre of 1989, the 1992 Concordia University massacre, the shooting at Dawson College in 2006 and the Quebec City mosque shooting in 2017.

Speaking in Val-d'Or, Que., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there are more discussions to be had around his government's proposed gun legislation.

"We are going to listen very attentively to, obviously, what the city council in Toronto has done, [and] what Montreal might do next," he said.

"We understand that one of the fundamental responsibilities of any government is to keep its citizens safe," Trudeau said.

Montreal's motion builds on one put forward by Toronto city council last month.

That motion urged the federal government to forbid the sale of handguns in Toronto, and for Ontario to outlaw the sale of handgun ammunition in the city, as well.

Yep. And would you believe the guy that did it was... of the same "extraction" as:

    -Danforth Shooting
    -CF Recruitment Centre Stabbing
    -Parliament Hill Shooting
    -Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Car attack
    -Edmonton Van Attack

If only Poly Remembers decided to tackle "that" problem, rather than spend the next 30 years terrorizing gun owners, imagine how different things could be...

montreal is now a true sh** hole in and out. you should see the streets to believeit. a single ride in montreal is more than enough to kill the drive of any car or truck if you don't slalom between giant holes. tie rod, rim, bolt joints....if you don't care,it may last only a day.

then, the unionized are ruling out this city. it's full of garbage bags at every corners, any day of the week. yet, whatever admin is sitting at the town house is virtue signaling the rest of the world.a pedant bunch of ass**les ,all of them.people of the plateau mont royal are the most rotten communists socialists of all the industrialized country of this planet if we except france.disgusting bunch of fake virtuous people who think the world start and end with them

f*** them all, a decade ago when i was living on montreal north shore ,i was making a point of wearing my CZ tactical sport t-shirt on my usual bike rides ,so i was pissing'em off.

every sundays, jeanne mance park is the place where all the human garbage are gathering.people f*** barely hidden behind trees, a giant cloud of pot smoke is floating over the park week ends long, the police is around permanently, checking for riots, drug deals....and general bullsh** happening there.when they all leave on sunday night, the place looks and smell like a junkyard .

seriously, montreal is really one of the most disgusting city i've ever seen.and i've had my fair part of trips in europe and in the states......BUT,for people who wants to practice their holigan skills, there's no better place.

seriously, what can i say? it's the raw truth.

and it's well known.people living there may sugar coat the facts, but funny to see how much are leaving only after a few years, tired of witnessing this city on an eternal despotism a gogo.

and the new mayor, that socialist bitch isn't going to change any of that.she's been elected on the basis of lies, the day after it's election she was already backing off on most of its promises, saying that, after the ''book opening'',she had no choice....all this has been said with a fooking smile ala turdo.hypocrisy at its best.

i don't live there anymore,i'm much further north in the bush, and i plan to sell my house to buy another one even deeper north, because there's to many montrealers during summer time,i just can't support the view of those ridiculous assholes carrying their fooking montreal mindset with them, on their unfortunate for us rurals , hollydays.
