Annoying bloatware.. I found the same thing with hotmail and yahoo was just ridiculous so I went to gmail. Oh well, who's next. No brand loyalty here.
I don't expect privacy in the digital world, so my personal emails are not that detailed. I do keep the msn accounts for spam dumps, you know, when some site I'm curious about wants an email address before showing me the content.
All that encryption etc. is impressive, but useless if I am communicating with someone who has a yahoo account. But I can see it for hosting a company domain.

    I like Proton.

I have issues with Fastmail. I knew the guy who used to own it.

He's given data to the cops before it was a thing. I don't trust the product.

That said, keep in mind none of these services are safe from hacking. That includes Proton.

Yahoo, which shut down yahoo personals (a dating site) 15 years ago, isn't sure if emails from "yahoo personals" are spam or not.

Not the same companies at all. Though Fastmail (as in Fastmail.fm) did end up buying the domain name Fastmail.ca from Richards.

Fastmail is a pay service. They have a free offering but the point of that is as a loss leader to their paid service.

Yup me too. Every update is more ... I don't know - garbage. Every thing done to make it "better" is more useless fluff and bother

And I notice some features seem to disappear. I used to be able to view the source code of suspicious looking email without having to open it, but that option seems to have disappeared with the most recent "update"

I remember that the big change with the second last update was that now you got to see a sexy "loading" screen every time you opened the site. Of course it is slow AF to load, which kind of kills the "mystique"...
