A 35-year-old Surrey man faces numerous property and firearms offences after Surrey RCMP seized a handgun from a stolen vehicle Wednesday.

Surrey RCMP’s auto-crime target team located a white Jeep Cherokee that was reported stolen out of Vancouver on Monday. The driver was arrested with the help of the Surrey RCMP’s gang-enforcement team.

Police seized a loaded 9mm handgun and ammunition, along with a quantity of suspected illicit drugs, credit cards and other items believed to be stolen.

Robert Leo Jones, who police called a prolific offender, faces a laundry list of charges including possession of property obtained by crime; carrying a concealed weapon; unauthorized possession of a firearm; unauthorized use of credit-card data; driving while prohibited; and breaches of several court orders.

He was also wanted on outstanding warrants for other unrelated charges.

“Prolific offenders tend to be responsible for a majority of auto thefts, so arrests like this can have a significant positive impact on property crime in the community at multiple levels,” said Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Glenn Atkins. “We are pleased that this investigation has resulted in both the recovery of a stolen vehicle, and the seizure of an illegal firearm. Stolen vehicles are often used to facilitate other offences.”

He is scheduled to return to Surrey provincial court June 11.

Our courts and justice system need to figure their s&@t out and stop the revolving door policy on repeat offenders.

Until you are disarmed there is little incentive to deal appropriately with these offenders.
