Best large pad for gun cleaning?

    Hello,

I did some basic searching on Google and was saturated with too many results, and I searched here but didn't find a dedicated thread.

What is the best large gun cleaning pad? Is there a name brand that's seen as the Cadillac of cleaning pads?

Normally I just lay out a towel on the kitchen table, but inevitably I get grief for staining them, and they're not really thick enough to protect from sharp gouges.

I've seen some smaller ones that are kind of like mousepad material, and often they have good gun breakdown diagrams on them, but I'm looking for something large, like 2x4 feet.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations on brands, websites, or other tips that I'm not even thinking of, thank you.

I use a 2' x 3' natural rubber door mat, the kind with the slightly raised edge and very small rubber cones throughtout. The solvents don't affect it, it is non-marring and things don't roll away off of it. I take it outside to dry it off after use.

It's not name brand, is under $20 at Canadian Tire. Also putting it under my Tipton gun vise keeps the vise from slipping about when cleaning rifles.

    Works for me.

Broken down cardboard box. Works great and I can usually find all I need in the basement for free.

I use a large piece of 6mm drysuit neoprene but it helps knowing people in the industry, not sure what it woulds actually cost.

Good responses so far, although I’m surprised that there doesn’t seem to be an obvious front runner.

Perhaps that’s why I haven’t heard of any, either.

Perhaps a chance for me to start a business to dominate the market of premium gun cleaning mats.

    Dog training pads.

Cheap, big, and if they keep dog pee from soaking through, Hoppes shouldn't be a problem.

The world Cadillac of gun cleaning pads is a chunk of 2 or 3 ft wide by how ever long you want, rubber conveyor belt. I've had a piece on my bench for years and you can't tell the difference in it now from the day I put it there.....and I've done a lot more to it than clean guns and spill nitro solvent on it.

    Ooooh, conveyor belt material, nice.

Are you able to post a pic? Is it flat or grooved? How thick?

I’m seriously considering looking into this as a side business.

If nothing else, for the home business write offs.

I use a piece of old carpet on the bench to protect firearms while cleaning. I also have large sections of carpet in the shop to protect me from cold concrete while working on vehicles. Conveyor belt also works well but a section of rubber stall matt is more flexible.
