“To date, there have been 12 shootings in Brantford, with four fatalities,” said the chief. “I believe that you have already reported that the rate of shootings in Brantford is twice that of Toronto – this is true.

“Generally speaking, these 12 shooting incidents were not random criminal acts, the persons involved are believed to be entrenched within criminal and high-risk lifestyles and in most cases there were known to each other,” Nelson said.
Someone on FB made the observation that S. Ont has had more gang related killings this year than the entire U.S.
That's unsubstantiated of course, but if true the authorities would obfuscate

US Stats can give either way depending upon who you quote.
The FBI UCR tends to downplay gang stats considerably, resulting in incredibly low numbers around 1%. For example unless there's an arrest for a gang member, and the gang member did it in support of the gang's illegal business, it's not counted as a gang related homicide.
The US Department Of Justice reports stats on "gang related" violence and homicide, where if the person is in the gang and commits domestic assault, which ends up with 90% of US homcides being gang related.

Similar in Canada. If you use the StatCan Homicide Survey (police reports), you get over hundreds of homicide with firearm each year. If you use the Statcan Causes Of Death (coroner's reports), you get tens per year.
