Liberals say video proves Scheer plans to cut government services

    Sept 9 2019
    Ottawa, Ontario

The Liberal Party is circulating an edited video of Andrew Scheer, saying it proves the Conservative leader plans to cut services.

On Monday, Finance Minister Bill Morneau shared a video on Twitter of Scheer speaking at a Conservative Party event in the riding of Sherwood Park—Fort Saskatchewan Alberta in September 2016.

In the video, Scheer says the party has an election to win and that some past Conservative governments have had a hard-edged tone to cuts. He also said that while cuts are important, the party has to be “very, very careful how we communicate that to people.”

“We can make the case for spending cuts, absolutely,” Scheer said, before the video cuts off.

In the full version of the video, which can be found on Facebook, Scheer begins by saying the government has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.

“We don’t need to find new ways to collect taxes from Canadians, we need to find a better job of spending what we’re already getting,” he said.

In this version, Scheer said the case for spending cuts can absolutely be made, but that people need to be aware of the problem first.

The full video also shows that Scheer’s comments follow discussion from then-leadership candidates Tony Clement and Brad Trost on how they would fix government spending.

Morneau said the video proves Scheer has “painful cuts” planned, but is trying not to talk about.

In another tweet, Morneau compares Scheer to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has cut funding to services like student grants and green energy projects.

The Liberal Party has continued a sustained effort to associate the federal Conservatives and Scheer with the Ontario Conservatives and Ford, whose ratings have plummeted since his election just over a year ago.

This isn’t the first time the Liberals have circulated old footage of Scheer online. In August, Liberal cabinet ministers, including Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, tweeted a video Scheer in 2005, in which he gave a speech in the House of Commons denouncing gay marriage.

Simon Jefferies, a spokesperson for the Conservative Party, said the video is desperation from the Liberals who won’t talk about their record. He said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to balance the budget in the last election, but has yet to.

“This is yet another way Justin Trudeau is not as advertised,” Jefferies said in an email. “Instead, he’s running endless deficits which threaten the social programs Canadians rely on, and will lead to him increasing taxes.”

Jefferies also noted that the Liberals have made cuts, including cuts to veterans, the military and killing a tax for Canadians who use public transit.

Zita Astravas, a spokesperson for the Liberal Party, said the party is investing in Canadians, creating jobs and growing the economy.

“Andrew Scheer would rather cut than invest in Canadian prosperity but Liberals will continue to move forward and invest in people and their communities,” Astravas said in an email.

But what happened next is even more interesting. The CBC picked up on it and ran an article in their 'Technology and Science' section (really??? 'Technology and Science'??? It's *******' political Liberal propaganda!!! I guess they can only push so many pro-Liberal pieces as 'analysis') titled Misleading Trudeau 'joke' video demonstrates the political power of editing which is supposed to teach their gentle readers how parties manipulate things. But what it really is, is a free rebuttal of the joke video on a topic where they are vulnerable. Helping the Liberals like that is how the CBC swings. True, the article doesn't say the Conservatives did it, but it sure leaves that impression and they let their comments section howl making the connection. But then a few days later Liberal minister Morneau (of the "I forgot I own a French villa" fame) tweeted out an attack on Scheer. In it, Morneau posts a video of Scheer and, you guessed it, it has sections edited out to alter the meaning. And it was the Liberal party unlike the tampering in the Trudeau video shown here.

Dirty hypocrites are those Liberals? Hell ya.

It's really simple. If you spend more than you bring in, you either have to bring in more (taxes) or you have to spend less (cut services).

I don't think we are hard done by in terms of services available, but we do spend a lot of dollars on stupid things. Our fragile economy can't handle much more for taxes. So guess what the sustainable and practical answer is....

That's not what the Liberals are doing.
They're getting $30 billion more in taxes, and are spending $50 billion more each year.
The difference, the $20 billion per year deficit, they figure adds to the federal debt at about GDP increases.
Their view is that makes it affordable.
It may be, right up until interest rates climb or GDP drops, as sooner or later they always do -- at which point all hell breaks loose.
    It's insane.

They're also investing in things, some in Canada, a lot outside Canada (like 'no beach poop' billboards). But their investments remind me a lot of the country of Nauru. Nauru is an island nation of about 5000 people that made hundreds of billions of dollars selling potash (fertilizer), and they spent it all on terrible investments. Their own airline, hotels all over the world, etc -- and they lost it all. In addition to blowing billions on bad investments, their government staff also just blew billions on luxuries and luxury travel. Worse, they ran out of potash, so they ended up with a country that 70% of the land was no longer suitable for life, and none of the water around the island was suitable for life. They were making about $10 million per resident, and now they're dirt poor and have to fly in all their food which is all canned. At one point they let anyone who wanted to open a bank, and Russian mafia opened one and laundered hundreds of billions of dollars through it.

People are so spoilt they only think about free stuff. They think nobody has to pay for it.

I would be upset with Scheer if it was anything less than "painful cuts", should he win.

Less government is better, and certainly one that is always heavily scrutinized on its spending is vital.

Yep, like the current call to have "free" menstrual product in our community centre, I can understand that they should have some with the high school nurse / first aid kit, cause kids can be forgetful etc etc.
But why should tax payer be paying for free stuff in community centre, is the average canadian that poor ???

As Chretien's Finance Minister Paul Martin cut spending, fired thousands of civil servants and downloaded billions in services onto the provinces to eliminate the deficit.
