Have one knife in its sheath for over 40 years now and its fine. Its also in its original box also. Only one seems to have a problem is my Buck 101 its been used a lot and maybe thats why its been stored for 20 years now and its got a little green on the bolsters.

"...had knives stored for years in their sheaths..." Ditto, but 'in leather' is more about how humid your place is than anything else.
"...before I found it again..." I'm glad it's not just me. Have a really good Soligen around here some place. snicker.

this is my Dad's knife from the '30s when he was trapping, it has lived in that moose hide sheath since then, could use a clean I guess, snap retainer is my old woggle from Cubs in the '50s

edit: knife is a Marbles Woodcraft

Oiled and sheathed is the only way to go. But only a thin coat. No need to grease it down...
