Has a SA-42 Flaming bomb marked barrel, which I'm told is normal in an earlier Remington.

A '42 made barrel on an '03 wouldn't be unusual. Remington didn't start with '03A3's until 1942 and made '03 Modifieds(very slight differences from an '03, but that what yours is.) until May of 1942.

Oh and '03's shoot really well. Any regular .30-06 will do but IMR4064 and 168 grain match bullets will make you think it's a match rifle.
Worst part about 'em is that the proper 18" bayonets are horrendously expensive.
