    Hypothetical coyote situation

Hypothetical situation. Lets say you had a full grown coyote in your very urban yard and you had to dispatch it accurately, and as quietly as possible from say....40 ft away. You've got 1 shot to do this. What round do you use ?

    .22 LR.

Everyone should have a box or two of CeeBee’s just for this.

If quiet were most important I'd use a crossbow bolt probably with a mechanical broadhead.

Lets say your hypothetical situation doesn't include anything except guns, because you have hypothetically never shot a crossbow, you don't own a hypothetical crossbow, and your 2 hypothetical dogs have it cornered in your fenced yard, barking and snapping at it. Your hypothetical dogs aren't disciplined enough to leave it alone when called, and they're going to get torn up if the hypothetical situation goes on for very long.

In order of importance, accuracy, 1 shot kill, quiet. You have no doubt about your shooting skill to pull off a very precise head shot at that distance if the round will do it's part. The round can not exit the hypothetical coyote's head. I was thinking subsonic 22LR, but I honestly don't know if they've got enough jam to penetrate a hypothetical coyote's skull. I've never shot one with a 22LR, much less a subsonic. For the record, a 300 win mag with 180 grain soft points at 50ish yards will pretty much turn a coyote's head into soup. 300wm is NOT an option in your hypothetical situation.

    My vote is the 17HMR.

Ok - hypothetically, stay with the .17 HMR. Skin out the coyote, put the dogs up for adoption and use the 'yote skin for your first down payment on a dog worth keeping.

    Win - win - win !!

Grab some subsonic .22 and take some shots at some 1 x 4 pieces of pine at various distances see the effect.

Also bring some regular .22 along for the experiment for comparison. Extra point if you can get a decibel meter( phone apps available) to place 50ft from shooting position.

Set up blind in garden shed?shoot from inside house? to contain noise maybe play some heavy metal

A single shot fired especially if no one is listening for it is hard to pinpoint its source and in an urban environment easily mistaken for other sounds.

    hypothetically speaking.
