Savage Axis II precision seems to be a reasonable deal, threaded heavy barrel in an Oryx by MDT chassis for $1200

Well I found a used Savage 10TR with a 24 inch barrel locally. I got it for a pretty good deal also. Now the search for glass begins.

I went with the Remington 700 PCR in .308 and I put vortex glass on it. It's a great setup that doesn't break the bank and it's extremely accurate!

I am using a Remington 700 in 308 with a KRG BRAVO CHASSIS in left hand. No glass yet.

Some one once said how much you spend on glass depends where you want to place in the shooting event.
I just coach long range shooting now. Most glass is NightForce.
It is just easier on the eyes after a day of shooting.
The challenge of retirement is how to spend time without spending money.
There is no place in an anti's head where reason can enter. from a Napoleon saying with a tweak.
Look around is there someone you can introduce to shooting because thatís the only way we will buck the anti gun trend sweeping Canada! "tigrr 2006"

I'm also getting into the market and mostly decided that the rifle will be a Savage axis 2 precision.
I'm now deciding on calibre, I have narrowed it down to .243 win or 6.5 Creedmoor. I want to use this rifle for mule and white tail deer as well as medium to longish range target. I believe the CM is more capable, however I'm already set up for reloading. 243 and I have a significant amount of once fired brass, upwords of 500 cases and several hundred projectiles in several weights.
    What would you do?

I ended up picking up a Athlon Helos BTR gen2 4-20 mil. I was going to go with a Vortex but I was talking to a few guys that have athelon scopes and they seem to like them.

I started shooting out to 500 yards this year with my .308's. Once I get that down, I'd like to push to 800.

Running a Savage 10 TR and Remington 700.

Like a goomba I dropped the receiver / barrel while replacing the stock of the 700 to a Magpul Hunter stock and broke the trigger. Just replaced it with a Trigger tech trigger and got it down to about a 2.5 lbs pull.

    It shoots REAL nice.

I've worked up 2 loads that seem to shoot nice, 168 grain Hornady V-Max and Match BTHP's with 44.1 grains of Accurate 2230, Federal standard primers.

I was able to bang a 20" gong at 500 yards piece of cake with thos loads once I got the hold over, but I was really struggling to hit the 10" gong (and didn't even try the 5") with both the 10TR and R700.

I'm not very good at reading the wind yet, but I'd like to get more practice.

I'm also working on a 150 Grain Hornady 150 Grain FMJ load (forgot the charge) for plinking.

Last range sesh I sighted in my MVP patrol (.223) with 69 grain SMK's, 24.4 gn W748 and was a bit disappointed I could only pull of a 2" 10 shot group at 100 yards, with 2 groups fired. It chrono'd at 2603 FPS, which seems really slow (although the MVP only has a 16.5" bbl, so I'm not sure if I want to bump the charge, exceeding the DO NOT EXCEED value in my Lee's Modern Reloading manual, but below the max charge listed in Sierra's load data).

Maybe it was an off day, because I have got a 1" 10 shot group with Hornaday A-Max 50 grain bullets before through the MVP. I'm not sure if I should just lower my standards to treat the MVP as a "Scout Rifle" maxed out to 400 yards.

I loaded the SMK loads with the MVP with a goal to try to shoot for 500 yards, but I don't know if it's up to the task. Optic was a Vortex HS-T 4-16x40 with BDC reticle.

The R700, on the other hand, I landed a 1.18" 10 shot group at 100 that I was happy with (best group of the day) with the 150 gn plinking loads with a Leupold Mark-AR 4-12x30 MILDOT scope.

Nailing a 2" gong at 200 was doable with both rifles (the MVP and R700), but I didn't quite have my holdovers right with both rifles.

I rattle canned the R700 stock and now feel a sentimental attachment to it.

Things are never going back to normal... but that's not a bad thing.
