    What is Going On Here?

So's I buys a big box of surplus ammo at an auction. It is 7,62X51 NATO stuff but that is as far as the description goes. Sealed box, no pics of the ammo.

Open it up and it is full of these things.

Open those up and this is what is in those pouches.

Question. What is that waxy green crap? It comes off with a shot of brake clean and wipe with a paper shop towel.

Throw them in the walnut shell media/ vibrating cleaner for a lil' bit and this is what comes out.

No real reason for asking, just idle curiosity... how many rounds are in this box?

No idea. Those were just the first couple of handfuls to come out of the polisher. Many more were to follow and needed another box to hold them all.

It is called Verdigris, it is formed from moisture and/or contaminates on brass. They could have been packaged in the summer allowing 50-70% humidity into the packaging, maybe? Is the packaging breaking down and contaminating them?

They should be fine to shoot.

Packaging appears fine. Rubber is intact and does not crack or split when opened. It will be a long day of cleaning these things but well worth it in the end.

Here's a surprise for you...what do you think of the La Grande Garand?
