Whether it's a gun, a knife, or a pool noodle, the crime is the same. The weapon used shouldn't be a factor. Bail conditions should be the same for all violent crime.

    I hate politicians.

They know the tool does not matter but the people fear firearms so its an easy sell they just pick the low hanging fruit gun owners as they follow the rules. if they cared about canadians they would address fentanyl deaths opioids at 7362 deaths a year if it was not about about being trendy and legacy building they would address the almost 300 canadians a year that die from nutritional deficiencies almost the exact same as die by firearms in canada a year. so its not about saving lives never was.

Currently, under subsection 515(6) of the Criminal Code, when an accused has been charged with an offence using a firearm it is more difficult to obtain bail.
    Why does the tool matter?
Howabout keep the shitstains off the streets, and watch crime rates plummet?
Oh, not good for business, sorry.

Maybe it's time to ban all knives too!

If it just saves one life, right?

    Criminals are people too, CLM!

Buffalo Police Credit Change in Tactic, Not Gun Control Laws, For Crime Drop
    Aug 22 2022, 22 minutes

    http://y2u.be/W11hTm48tao

Shootings in Buffalo, New York are down by 36% this year, but it's not because of any other gun control laws approved by lawmakers. Instead, police are crediting a shift to focus on "micro hot spots" for the drop in crime; a strategy that targets violent criminals rather than the general public or legal gun owners.

97% of city blocks are mostly crime free, with 3% are the hot spots with the majority of violent crime.

Buffalo police working with the Erie county sheriff's office, state police, the fbi and atf. Concentrated investigations on "the trigger pullers and gun traffickers which are roughly 75 people in buffalo new york " according to police estimates. The law enforcement agencies executed search warrants filed charges in state and federal courts to get some of those accused of violence off the streets. Again 75 people according to the buffalo police chief are driving the violence in that entire city.

The idea: Put police officers in the places where there has been recent gun violence.

The police aren't there to ticket drivers and arrest people, although they can if they see a crime in progress or a traffic violation. But that's not the point.

"Our presence alone will act as a deterrence for any other gun violence," Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said.

After two years of near record-high numbers of shootings in Buffalo, gun violence is on the decline in the city, even when the May 14 massacre at Tops Markets on Jefferson Avenue that left 10 dead and three more shot is factored in.

Shootings are down about 36% in the first seven months of this year, compared to 2021, according to Buffalo police data. For the month of July, usually one of the busiest for crimes, the number of people who were shot was down 65%, compared to both 2020 and 2021. Shootings in cities across the state outside of New York City have overall shown a decrease in shootings, but Albany and Syracuse have continued to see increases, according to data from the state.

So,the task force is actually going after criminals (and they know who the players are, too) where they live and pull their bullshyte. My goodness, what a novel idea.

And going out of their way to smile and wave at everyone who isn't 'known to police'. Essentially, their instructions are, if you/police-officer don't recognize them from the photos we handed out this week, police-officer is to smile/wave/move-away-quickly. Thus giving a sense of re-assurance, without being imposing.

This is opposite to stop-and-frisk, where they tried to stop lots of people to appear random -- which had the effect of alienating the entire community.

    This 'new' technique is
    a) targeting the known criminals only (not grabbing people randomly) and
    b) patrolling the hot streets at random intervals, for deterrence

As I recall, in Toronto, Chief Blair did the same thing in ~2006, adopting the policy of instituted recently by the previous chief, of following those who were out on bail. That got expanded to stopping citizens randomly, and that eventually put the kybosh on the entire thing.
