    28 Gauge set up

Back when I converted one of my PW’s from 12 to 28 gauge I thought I had done all the adjustments and it was ready to go. Apparently not. After the second station the turret stuck. I knew this was a high primer so I lifted up on the hull and got it to the next station. Thinking it was ready to go I’d filled the turret behind with hulls so I kept going. The wad ram caught the top of the wad on the second next station. I stopped adding hulls and worked my way around lifting hulls and tweaking wad petals. First load looked horrible

From what I read on the digital calliper I’m around.060 high on the primers. The dished crimp is because the wad ram is too low. That was confirmed as i drained shot out of some of the later hulls.

Here’s what a wad looks like compared to a new one

Primer depth is set by removing the primer insertion post.

Depth of the screw on the bottom is .346. Going to add .060 to that

While it’s off that primer post mechanism felt sticky. Clean up with Hoppes #9 and lube with Hornady one shot

I started messing around with the depth of crimp on mine for buckshot loads. I load absolutely everything with Winchester white wads because thats what I have a ton of. Im having problems with the crimp slowly opening up over time due to the was being a bit too high. I have a lot to learn about this whole shotgun reloading thing.

Running in single shell mode it looks like my guesstimate on the primer works.

Apparently i can’t any upload any more pics. Don’t know if putting them on Imgur will help, but I’ll give that a try

Crimp is much better. Needs a bit of taper then im ready to go progressive!

They are tenting up because the legs or crush section of the wad is being compressed too much. There’s enough force there to overcome the resistance of the crimp. The solution there is a wad with a shorter crush section. I’ll have to dig around and see what might potentially work for you.

    Edited to add picture

    Here’s a WAA12, WAA12SL, WAA12L and a WAA12R to illustrate different crush sections

Den, if you can find some WAA12F114 or the Claybuser clone CB1114-12 they are made for 1-1/4 ounce field loads and should solve your tenting issues nicely.
