^ Something like that will happen in 900 million years : Earth burned to a crisp by the Sun, then swallowed whole and dissolved.

    Unless we can move our planet to a higher orbit... it's gonna be "Climate Change" x 1 000 000 000 000 !

I’m not worrying about 8 or 9 billion years from now.

Of course not all physicists and astronomers will agree on these topics, which are often the point of contention. Personally, I like to keep my mind open to all possibilities. Perhaps the Moon is just a freakish, one of a kind natural occurrence. Perhaps the Moon was placed in orbit of the 3rd planet purposely billions of years ago. Perhaps. In all probability, we will never really know for sure.

The other possibility is that is has been used as an observation vantage point much more recently, on the scales of just millions of years. The Solar system is spinning around the galaxy same as other star systems and, every once in a while, we come VERY close (on cosmic scales) to other star systems. If one of them was inhabited by a technological civilization millions of years ago, it is quite probable that they would've sent probes or possibly even AI to park on the Moon and observe Earth's evolution over the next millions of years, for scientific purposes.

Contrary to Earth and its' corrosive atmosphere (O2), parking something on the Moon can have it last pretty much indefinitely.

Laugh all you want, there are actually serious physicists pitching this idea as quite possible, maybe even probable. If an Alien civilization ever presented an interest in planet Earth, the evidence will be on our Moon (as an observation vantage point and a communications station).

If we ever visit another star system to observe a planet of interest in the long term, that's what we will do too : park our equipment on the nearest moon. Also, it is quite important to stop thinking on the scales of human lifetimes when we consider what is possible. These projects would be on scales of thousands, if not millions of years... and managed by self-maintaining and self-replicating AI machines.

If you want to watch some interesting podcasts about these topics with credible physicists and astronomers being interviewed, I recommend "Event Horizon" with J.M. Godier on YouTube :

Micrometeorites moving at mach25, and the full brunt of radiation ranging from UV to gamma on the moon is far worse than a little O2 on earth.

Not really. As I said, an installation on a moon would need to be managed by AI machines who can self-maintain and replicate. They would also need redundant systems and proper shielding. Burying sensitive equipment under the surface is also a safe bet. Our own spacecraft are already designed to handle most micrometeorites and radiation with shielding and backup systems.

O2 is a bitch. It manages to dissolve metals and mountains over time and very little can survive it. Add the weather effects too. Plus Earth's moving crusts recycle everything that's on the surface or buried every few million years. The Moon is not geologically active and has no atmosphere, so it doesn't have those problems.

Minus the threat of some meteorites (of which chances are minimal), the Moon is essentially frozen in time. It's been said that the Apollo landing sites will remain undisturbed for millions of years on the Moon (footprints, flags and everything), barring some freak accident like a direct meteor strike.

Any intelligent Alien civilization interested in Earth's evolution would've already weighted these pros and cons, long ago. For context, our biosphere has been visible and detectable across the galaxy for billions of years now... and we are simply very late to the game.

Right. I just wanna make it until at least my 65th birthday !!
Nothing will F--k you up as much as the realization that there's no real reason the alphabet needs to be in order !!

Again... if we are to discuss such a topic, we need to stop thinking along the lines of human lifetimes.

Our planet and everything on it has a predicted 900 million year death sentence. For context, dinosaurs lived from about 245 to 65.5 million years ago. On cosmic scales, this is a very short time.

Ironically, humans and our technology are the ONLY thing that can save Earth and all life on it in the future. As the Sun heats up, oceans will boil off and Earth will slowly turn into a baked rock, then get absorbed by the Sun as it expands out. The only salvation is to "push" the planet into a different orbit.

Tell that to the leftie Climate Change alarmists who are preaching massive "depopulation" to save Mother Gaia. Humans and our tech are Mother Gaia's only hope, lol!
