Ceiling Mounted Radiant Quartz Heaters

Giving some thought to mounting one ( possibly two ) ceiling mounted radiant quartz heaters in my detached two car garage. One would be for the vehicle and the other for the work bench.

1. Does anyone have hands on experience with these units ( or similar ) ?
2. What is/was the application ?
3. Would you recommend them for use in a garage ?
4 If you had issues with them, what were those issues ?
5. Is there a good alternative product available and what is it please ?

I mounted one above my work bench in the garage. It does ok for what it is (radiant heat), you can feel the difference at -25C but you're not getting "warm", just comfortable enough to complete the task without gloves. The built in light isn't worth a shit. It is what it is for the dirt cheap PA price I paid for it.

For "real" heat I installed one of the PA 3000W/5000W heaters that has a variable fan speed and thermal protection. It plugs into my welder plug and it does alright keeping me warm in the 12'x14'x8' area I use in the garage to weld, grind etc.

I have one, probably 8-9 years now. It doesn't have the light which I'm fine with. It does the trick for me but I'm in North Vancouver and it's an insulated garage including the door.

It would be nice if it could be temperture contolled rather than either on or off.

Uncle uses a pair in his shop, about the area of a small two car garage. Most of the time it’s warm enough to work in there with mechanics coveralls and no winter gear. He still has an electric construction heater mounted for truly cold days. One over the bench is nice in that all your tools are warm to the touch when you grab them.

One item of warning I’ve heard is don’t mount them too close to a vehicle, or your paint job could regret it.

Installing a 110v thermostat on the circuit could take care of that. It would have to be away from the heater though, or it trips off the radiant heat instead of ambient temperature.

I had the required bits and pieces from some upgrades but it would have been a nice feature. I mount the thermostat behind the actual unit and it seems to do the trick for temp control.

I installed the one pictured this fall in my 20 x 24 shop. Used it to heat while my furnace was broke down. With the help of another small electric, it got me through some -30 temps until the part for the furnace arrived. I was favorably impressed with it and now have it on standby if needed.

Watt for watt I prefer a warm room with good insulation but global warming would be even better, the sooner the better.

I'll add to what was said... Don't forget to turn it off. Your hydro bill will remind you otherwise...
