Bullets and powder are still reasonable, just those damn things that make it go bang.

Reloading will give you better control of accuracy. I was lucky in running into several 'Sales' and got ca 1K rounds total of 308 way under $1/round. Nothing like that any more . . . I'm too old/poor to start reloading - "if I was 10 years..."
Forgot to say, you might find a really good deal on a used rifle. A couple years ago I found a '60s Rem 722 in 308 that had been re-barreled (only 5x test rounds) and Magpul AICS converted and refinished stock. All new except receiver/action.

Have you looked at Tikka? I have heard nothing but great things about the T3x. It comes in 308 and can go into a MDT Chassis.

These folks ranked it high, along with the Sig Cross, but I think the Sig might be above the budget listed. https://gununiversity.com/best-hunting-rifles/

    anybody else have Tikka experience?

Don’t know where you’re at but here is my 2 cents. Bought this .270 Tikka as a spare while waiting for my exports to come down, got my eyes opened, then got some MT metal components for the bolt, trigger bottom metal and metal mags.

The most accurate .25 and up rifle I currently own…..

    My recommendations...
44mag lever in the bush and 308 bolt in the field for deer. Everything else is uncivilized

Powder is getting better, and bullets do vary by what you buy.
