    My son bought a Garand

Got a call from my son last night. He bought a Winchester built M1 yesterday. Neither of us have ever owned one and as most of you know from my posts here I’m a shotgun guy. I do know he shouldn’t use any old 30.06 ammunition and to use the correct weight and velocity rounds. From the video on messenger it looks pristine. Any advise the collect kind can give us?

Yes he is. Good wages, reasonably cheap place to live. Lots of time and money for toys

You can buy adjustable gas plugs that allow you to shoot any 3006 in the garand, if he is stateside, shouldnt be hard to find garand specific ammo, theres a few places that sell it, and i think you can buy surplus from cmp

I would think that Garand specific fmj stuff is probably going to be cheaper than most of the hunting type ammo anyways

I have one in 308win but haven't shot it yet.

If he needs to put a scope on it here is a idea for a DIY option version -

I've seen red dot mounts that attach to the rear sight block. I might consider that at some point myself.

Good for your son. That old warhorse will give him years of fine shooting. Keep it lubed properly (grease, not oil) and it will be all one could wish for. I suggest replacing the recoil/op-rod spring as part of it's maintenance schedule. Every few thousand rounds would be ok. I shoot whatever ammo I can find in my horde of rifles. As mentioned, there are two CMP stores in the States that he should be able to find surplus ammo. Battle Tested forum by Schuffs parkerizing might be in order as well. Hang out with all the Garand/BM-59 fanboys.
