.308 is actually the more powerful load compared to 7.62x51mm. Which is the opposite of the .223 vs 5.56x45mm comparison.

Basspro had a chart they posted showing roughly what calibres could be used to hunt which animals...

As for which gun to look at. If you have the chance to, take a look at the Patriot. I ended up picking one up and it's pretty good. I only put about a box of rounds through it so far so very few comparatively to my other guns. (And really not much in general.) But the gun felt good in hand and I have to say it absorbed the recoil of the 30-06 pretty handily. I was shooting Winchester "Deer Season" 150 grain bullets and it had way less kick than I expected. (Felt like less kick than my friend's .308...) I'll have to try other bullet weights to see how they fare.

Though the Thompson Centre Compass I've heard good things about too. I'd love to try shooting the TC Compass, Remington 783, Mossberg Patriot and Savage Axis side by side to see how they all compare.

I like to shoot alot. I spend 3-4 hr per range session.

I believe 7.62x51 can be had for under 50c per round, if I am not mistaken.

I can always reload later on.

The best price I have found for .308 is around 83 cents plus tax a round and it is military surplus. Buying powder in bulk as well as projectiles I am loading for around 60 cents using Varget and Sierra Match King 155 gr.

I can reload for .24 cents for powder, 2.1 cents a primer and 32.5 cents/projectile which I think is very good.

I just bought a case of Austrian surplus .308 for 82 cents each and will use those in the AR 10.

Great call. Bought a assortment of 25,000 about 4 ++ years ago IIRC and paid 21.00/1000.

Was starting to realize I would need more small rifle and a guy I coffee with out of the blue asked me if I wanted 5,000 for $125.00. Couldn't resist that deal!

If you’ve got a source for under 50 cents a round factory, please let us know. I’d be interested for sure.
