    Not necessarily, especially for a new shooter. I love 30.06 as well, but even with a really squishy gel butt pad like the on my Browning X-Bolt, it's still a lot of "bang" for new shooters.

    It's not impossible, it's just the absolute most gun I'd recommend, with 223 the least gun I'd recommend.

    There are all sorts of other 30-cal rounds that could be covered, but I wouldn't recommend any of them over the 308 or 30.06. Other 7mm rounds have some advantages, but the sheer commonality of 308 and 30.06 are hard to argue against.

    IF he only wants one gun for hunting it is very difficult to beat a 30-06 as you have a huge range of bullet weights and if reloading is in the mix loads that will make a massive difference in recoil.
