there are "like" buttons in the top left corner of threads now...I reckon (because of the f in the middle it) that it is part of facefook...that right?

it didn't show up on this one so is it something that has to be added?

learning a creatures habits is the best way to avoid it ;)

It's my understanding that the Facebook button doesn't appear in all sections (this one is a good example). It's essentially a link to share a given thread on one's Facebook timeline.

so even though I avoid social media like the plague I can end up being a part of it just by posting on GOC?

I hope that's not the case and would like the specifics asap.

if it only appears in certain forums I want a list so I can avoid them.

not happy that this was Liberaled in ...must be because of the politics...

It doesn't show any names or even content. If a GOC has a Facebook account and clicks on the Like button, he has two options: 1) simply "like" the thread, or 2) "like" and share a comment. In either case, a link is posted on their Facebook. It's just a link to the thread. If someone clicks on it, that person can read the thread just the same as anybody else can if they browse to GOC whether they're a member or not. Depending on the user's privacy settings on Facebook, one may limit who he or she is sharing the link with. The forum is public, with or without Facebook.

Try this. Log out of GOC. Browse the forums. You will notice that most threads are available to the public. Someone clicking on the Like buttons is the same as someone sending a mass email with a link to a thread.

I have a FB account (to "like" gun stuff; I have two friends! Prairie Dog and my wife, lol.) and I don't understand what it does yet; I tried "Like"ing a specific thread in General Firearms, and it didn't appear on my wall-thing (is this my timeline?), so I unLiked GOC's FB page and tried again...nothing seems to happen.
It doesn't seem to lead back here, but it doesn't seem to do anything either....inconclusive.

Huh, I did what awndray said and logged out of GOC; I thought there were more private forums? I guess I don't mind, I enjoy browsing, say, Rimfire Central, or ARF, and I'm not a member there.

It depends on your privacy settings. Try it again. Like a thread, then go to your Facebook. Go to your own page and then go to your Activity Log (the button is on your cover image). You should see something in there.

Interesting. Gets the site more exposure, I guess....which subforums are FBable? Seems a lot of them...not Off Topics though? Will wait for explanation.

I'm likely getting put off for nothing...
I just hate what social media has done to folks...the cyber bullying and sh!t that wouldn't exist without it makes me long for a different time...before West Nile and Sars came across the big water...

I do a lot of buy & selling locally on facebook, kijiji doesn't allow firearm sells, so islanders took to facebook for such dealings.

not a single mod/admin reply...

anyone in power care to comment on the situation?

if not...I smell nefarious purpose...

Yep exactly we are collecting your data to sell to mexico so the Chinese overlords reporting to the zombie aliens know who has guns.

Honestly its a like button it likes the thread and doesn't show off the all posts. Facebook page for Goc has no links to the forum besides saying to go sign up here.

It doesn't show the posts on Facebook, but it does indeed link to them. As mentioned in an earlier post, most of the forum is public. Anybody could read these posts without having to register, with or without Facebook or other such sites.

Sorry it doesn't post to the GOC Facebook page. It will like your liked topics to your personal Facebook page which again like said before is based on your privacy. But I likes the topic and show the topic you like not the whole post.

Goc is social media, we have pictures, and social interactions, so if you goal is to avoid social media, you're not doing well.

Thank you for this...I might have gone my whole life without knowing

not a lot of cyber bullying or hourly updates on folks lives here...but thanks for the valuable contribution.

much obliged.

I'm with you Mr. Bro. I used to be a techie and FB scares the crap out of me. I have very important reasons to keep my firearms interests carefully close to the vest. Being outed could really hurt my wife and me.

I happened to include a person I like and trust as a FB friend. Within days, a nosy budinksky in my life caught onto the person's page, got her occupation and my cover was close to blown. That same person posted several semi nude pictures of me on her page without my permission. Fortunately they were of me as a baby and before I became a sex object. :tounge:

I don't have the time or the will to learn all the intricacies of FB. Besides it changes frequently.

I have trouble enough hiding my slightly left- pinko- commie persona on here.:run:

FYI for those running Firefox, if you really don't want FB icons and such on websites, install the add on Adblock Plus. The add the Social Media blocker. It blocks those FB links. I have it enabled on my browser and had to disable it in order to see what everyone was talking about as I never noticed it.
