Hey everyone I'm new to shooting, and an planning on going to a gun show and I was wondering how buying a pistol works at a gun show?

The first thing you need to do is join a gun club and one that has a restricted range, a trap club won't do. I would not expect to be able to take a handgun home from the gun show unless you can get all the paper work done the same day, ie transfer and ATT. I haven't purchased a handgun in some time so there may be provisions for email ATT's but i doubt it. Some body will chime in with more info than me, it also helps if we know what prov. your in. Some differences in how the CFO's work in different areas.

Oh yes I'm in ontario. I'm really just curious, I have seen pistols at these shows and wondered how it worked

Last time I bought a pistol I was told there was now a mandatory 24 hour wait to get your transfer and ATT even if they email it to you but that is in Alberta. Also depending on the dealer at the show each one may handle things differently. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that they would have to ship it to you when the transfer went through.

Unless the transfer can be done that day you are going to have to wait just like any other purchase. The only times I walk out the same day with a restricted or prohibited purchase is when I buy at auctions. They are set up to do multiple transfers with the CFC on the day of the sale which is usually on a Saturday.
