I may not be posting in the right place. I'm sure you will move it if it isn't.

My son was looking for some parts on another Canadian gun forum. A fellow came on and said he knew where to get these parts. He said he couldn't tell him on the forum the name of the company because it would be blocked out. This company is not a dealer on this forum so it can't be named on the forum apparently. My son was surprised because it is an American company that ships to Canada. If it matters he was ordering some mags.
Anyway, the fellow pm'ed my son and told him the name of the company, in the States, where he could get these mags. Well guess what? The name of the company was blacked out on the pm. I thought PM's were just that: PRIVATE messages. Apparently I am wrong at least on that forum.
Just for the heck of it I PM'd my son on that forum and mentioned the name of the company. Sure enough it was blocked out.
So, my question is: Does GOC block out info on pm's on this forum?

BTW, I am not trying to start a session against another forum. I just want to know if this is standard procedure for any forum and does GOC do this.

Thank-you for your question,

We do not and will not censor or block any companies, orgs, people or persons on here when it comes to discussion.

That being said, we are currently not setup to accept international dealers. Right now our focus is Canadian companies. Eventually we would like to branch out, but for now we're trying to look after our own boarders first. Being a Canadian gun group, it only makes sense to focus on the Canadian market at this time.

Now, would we block and/or censor somebodies review or mention of a company not associated with us? Hell no. that's not very Canadian is it? People are free to choose where they shop and buy goods, we can't control anybody and quite frankly why would we? ...it's none of our business. If the post or discussion adds to the content of this site then that's a good thing IMO.

Can a company not affiliated with us come on here and start soliciting and engage in commercial activities? No, that wouldn't be fair to the GOC Dealers and I think that's a fair place to draw the line.

I hope this clears things up.

For more info you can read our terms of use agreement.

I assume he's referring to hycaps.net

Has nothing to do with being or not being a dealer. Hycaps is in the grey area of the law(at least in GT's mind), and from what I can gather, GT doesn't want CGN involved in anyway if Hycaps goes down in a blaze of lawsuits and ATF busts.

You can't curse in PMs, hycaps is blocked the same way *insert bad word* is.

Hycaps is on the up and up and I've done business with the company. The owner of Hycaps is a Canadian from BC. And with every order he includes copies of the CBSA ruling on mags, the laws stating they have to be pinned, his paperwork on the pinning, etc.

Like I said, in GT's mind. Unless the owner personally pissed GT off, which could also be the case.

How was the shipping price?

USP raised a concern that gt may be in possession of ITAR restricted items that were not export approved.

Guys let's keep the speculation to a minimum please. GOC is not interested in what the other guys have or have not done.

On topic, if you guys have any other questions about our policy in this context, please let me know.

No offense meant to anyone posting in this thread...

The last thing we need here is more drama started elsewhere.

If I wanted to sort through the C G N crap I'd be over there.

Someone with red or blue letters please end this quickly... I begs ya! :p

edit: looks like 50 types faster than me...

As 50cal has put it in the past...we're blazing our own trail here on GOC. We're not trying to make a carbon copy of another site. We are making a VERY conscious effort at not suppressing much of anything. We all know that it was very frustrating when things would just go missing on certain "other" sites. Everyone is free to post anything they want really. All that we ask is that everybody use common sense and keep things on a "family oriented" level. No nude or "suggestive" posts. Language should be kept to what you might say around the dinner table with your whole family present....as in, censor yourself. I know for a fact that our moderators don't want to censor anyone. As long as everyone acts like adults, there's no need to. We're all big boys and girls and we know right from wrong.

Our primary focus is to build a place where we can ALL come and enjoy ourselves without having to wade through neck deep "stuff" if you know what I mean. We also don't want to make so many darned rules that everybody is asking themselves "if I post this, will I be stepping on a landmine?" The people who run this site are all gun owners. We legitimately want to build something that can benefit us all as Canadian gun owners.

If it'll benefit another member by posting a link to another website, have at it. None of us minds.

I am glad to see you guys here are not as anal about hotlinking to other vendors or places that carry items....I for one see it as good competition for all involved.

but the OP raised a good question with regards to PM's, do you read them, monitor them, or is it an automated thing, to block out certain words in the PM's and on the rest of the site, as vBulletin can be set to do this.

now if PM's are being read and monitored, I think it only fair this be told to those joining this site ?

perhaps something like this can be put in your Policy, if it is practiced here

VI. Private Messages (PMs) at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:

Some may be aware that administrators at many sites routinely read members' PMs. This practice is not condoned by the owners of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, for we feel that Private Messages should be just that: private.

It must be stated, however, that xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx also has an obligation to its members to protect their interests, and to protect the site integrity as a whole. This includes protection from phishing, scamming, criminal activity, and any other actions which may compromise or harm the site or its members.

With this in mind, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx may be required to access certain individuals' PMs in the event of reasonable suspicion of wrong doing. Although legally all electronic data, including PMs, on this site are fully accessible without warrant via ownership rights by the administration, such an action should only be necessary in extreme situations. In the event a PM should be read, the parties involved will be informed after the fact.

We would hope this is not necessary, but we also want to keep all members informed of our policies put in place for everyone's protection. Members of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx who wish their communications to remain completely private should consider another medium.

the only reason we had the above was due to the fact we had moles on the site join and spam our members via PM's only, so to protect our members and ourselves we needed to monitor PM activity, only if we thought something was being done against the members or the site

now if you don't monitor PM's.....

then just ignore my ramblings......

PM's are NOT monitored at all! We will never read a PM unless someone has reported it!

As for the censors, those are automatic, and would block out that word no matter if it was in a PM or posted openly on the forums. At this time we do not have a censor.

EXCELLENT.....

that is the best way, love it.....

I really hate being at places where I have to always wonder, can I post this or that, can I say this or that, will it get me in chit and so on.....

This is going to be a great place to hang out....that is for sure...

.

PM's can be read on other vbulletin boards and typically only by admins after a long process of "hacking the code", but not ours.

To do this we would have to install extra software and coding into the forum, which could make it unstable, not to mention the issues of privacy laws and breaking our member's trust.

We have no intention of ever looking at a PM from a member of this forum.

Like Drache had if a PM is reported, then we can review it to see what the issues is.

We have not installed the censorship software, as we believe that you are all adults and can act accordingly on the site without software, and It is unlikely that we would censor a company here unless it happens to be a gross violation of Terms of Use.

I hope that clears it up abit more, we are looking to build a community here, not a dictatorial state.

Thank you. That was my point precisely. I tried to make that clear. Is it the policy of GOC to monitor, alter, or block private messages? I didn't name forums specifically and also stated I wasn't interested in starting an "other forum" bashing thread. I just wanted to know if GOC does this. I understand if it is the policy of a forum-any forum- to block non-supporting dealers or whoever in the public portion of their forums and they make that clear to their members, then fine. On the other hand, private messages are a whole different ball game. Once you start blocking out certain names, groups, forums, etc., where does it end? We're not China yet, I hope.
So I simply asked if this was the policy of GOC because I really respect the principles behind the people who started this forum and I would like to remain a proud member of GOC. I just needed verification. And, BTW, thank you Blacksmithden, JWirecomm109, and other mods. I got the answer I was looking for.

Nice to see that questions get answers and topics aren't so easily swerved here at GOC.

I still forget that the quality of the staff and membership here helps to keep threads from being taken off topic and deteriorating.

Well done folks!
