What do people do with magnesium ribbons, though? Fire starter?

Yes. Go to Ebay and pick up a bag of powdered aluminum, some powdered iron oxide, mix in correct proportions, stick a piece of magnesium ribbon in it, and light. The thermal reaction (thermite) will light a piece of wood on fire that you just pulled up off of the bottom of a lake. Stand well back and DO NOT look at the light when it's going!

I have the pistol grip version, it’s a fun little gun. Doesn’t like certain brands of low brass target loads though. Double feeds. I don’t know if the rim diameters are off a hair or what....
