I don’t have much to add to this conversation other than my personal experiences, I frequently roam around on other reloading forums if I’m looking for some kind of information about different things. I do so as a guest and if I’m unable to enter a forum without creating an account, I just move on.
That’s how I found this one, I lurked around for quite a while before deciding to join because I enjoyed this site over cgn. I don’t know anything about bots or cyber security I just think we would have fewer members and fewer future members if the front door was locked.

Exactly.

Also not all forums have the same permissions and it looks to me as if some forums have been rendered specifically "PRIVATE" or aren't even visible unless your a member.

The marketplace, giveaways, troubleshoot and fraud report look private.

Off topic, Market place rules are hidden.

You don't lock down the entire site. Just sections of it. Visit other forums, you'll see what I mean. There are ways to do it without preventing the legitimate folks from getting some of what they're looking for. Some people have argued that advertisers wouldn't bother with a locked down site. I disagree. Look at CGN as a prime example. And again, don't just look at this as a GOC vs CGN. But it's an easy comparison.

You wouldn't get fewer members. Again, look at CGN. People sign up for anything and everything these days, just to see memes, click a like button or display the support emoji of the day. If people want some quality content, they'll sign up.

I'm done.

So a hypothetical forum has public areas, and also has “private” areas that can only be seen by someone that is logged in.

What is preventing a bot or anti-org or government agency from creating 1 or 100 accounts to log in to see these “private” areas?

GOC already has private forums

Nothing.

Scraping data isn't hard.

Contextualizing it is one of the hardest things imaginable - that's why social media platforms exist.

Right. My point is, it’s only “private” if you personally vett people. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Right....and that's virtually impossible. Some facebook groups ask you to answer a few questions, and then the moderators look at your answers and decide if you're worthy or not. Anyone who wants to get in here could easily come up with acceptable answers with simple google searches if they didn't know. Do we make the questions so hard that only people with a long background in shooting could answer them ? That leaves out any new shooters who might want to get on the site. Believe me guys..we've discussed this to death over the years, and things are the way they are for a reason.

How about the 'I am not a bot' thingy? It's been so long since I signed up, I don't recall if this site has it.

I like the ones that ask you to click on all the pictures that have a...bus...traffic light....airplane....in them. Then they show you 9 pictures that are barely discernible from a Rorschach ink blot test.

Captcha is stupid. 2FA would be better. Granted, this is just a forum.

Still no word on anything from the board owners, eh? Too busy advertising deals on CGN?

I really don't get this weird arrangement. I see Taccom is now advertising so Presumably the site sponsors are helping to keep the board running. But why hasn't SFRC chimed in since the change of ownership? Where's Telos and all the improvements that we were told about?

Are suggestions and complaints being heard? I'm not asking the mods, and this is not a knock on them. I'm asking about the top dog who has yet to even say hello.

There are currently 219 users online. 7 members and 212 guests

Certainly not a record number, but the lack of response from the board owner confirms that there are no f*cks to give. Well done.

By the way, the privacy policy and terms of use need to be updated with the new company name. My understanding is Gun Owners of Canada Inc is no longer in business.

It’s always 500+ guests. I highly doubt there are 500 humans viewing this site all the time.

I once saw recently well over 800 guests and only 5 members online here at one time, at the moment it is 512 guests and 9 members!

Seems like being a member here offers few benefits when guests get nearly all of it for free!
