PAL/RPAL Timelines

How so ? Can you be specific about the answers you got from the RCMP ?

They usually ask you to tell your references to call in. What changed ?

You can call them and ask if there is anything missing or if they any information but you cannot make your references call them until they ask for.

My references were not called. Neither they contacted me. I got my new license in 45 days.

Best is to wait and call every 3 days to get an update. No point making references call them . They might not even need it.

Oh I fully agree with you. No point asking your references to call before the RCMP has told you it was time.

But once your file has passed initial stages and is in process, it's pretty safe to ask them for it.

Yeah. I called them twice after status changed to in progress. Both times I was told that my pictures was sent out for scanning. I was hesitant to ask if they need my references to call in. But I did not bother because they din't say anything either. Next thing I know my license was approved.

You are lucky. I'm 5 weeks in and still nothing on the RCMP website.

Yeah I called them. They said my file had not been entered in the system yet, and to call back in a week.

Just called them a few minutes ago. Still nothing in their system. My credit card has not been charged yet.

The guy on the phone said to call back in a few days.

I called them at 15:00, the same answer.

Even after you get the license, its about another 2-3 weeks before you can shoot your restricted firearm lol. The transfer period and registration certificate arrival time can be almost 3 weeks. I was so happy to get my license in 45 days but had to wait another 3 weeks before taking to the range. I think with Non- restricted you can buy and shoot right away.

Today:completed initial processing. It is now in progress

So they received it on April 19th and it popped up online on June 1st.

Mine they received it on April 25th so I should expect to see it appear online sometime next week...

So much for the 45 days processing time...

So much for the 45 days processing time...

It's 28 days from when they receive to start initial processing. Then add another 17 plus days until it finally gets approved. So they try and take 45 days to get it completed, but usually it is a bit longer, depending on backlog.

Well I'm at 36 days and still nothing on the website or when I call them.

So we're 8 days after the 28 day period and initial processing has not started.

I still don't understand why they can't have the website updated earlier to show that the application has been received.

My timeline so far

Jan 9th they received it
Feb 5th card charged (28th day)
Feb 28th completed initial process, now in progress (50th day)

No change to date. Now on day 144 (94 days “in progress”)

It just takes time I guess.

My timeline,

Mailed April 10th, registered mail.
Arrived in NB April 12.
In progress May 21st.
Approved May 31 and said to expect in the mail within 2 weeks.

Then never did contact my references however I did go through an intense RCMP security check in November of 2017 for my work so perhaps they thought I had been raked over the coals enough. No criminal history either so I imagine that helped.

40 days since registered letter was received in Miramichi. Still nothing on the website nor when I call them.

My credit card also still has not been charged...

I will give them a call on Wednesday to see if anything has happened. It will be 6 weeks exactly since the application was received by the RCMP in Miramichi.

Some news just now.

I just received an email notification that my credit card was charged $80 so I checked the RCMP website and my application finally shows up as having completed initial processing (whatever that means) and is now in progress.

The application was received on April 25th, 40 days ago.

The wait continues, but let's hope the next stages in the process go quickly to catch up and deliver within the average timeline of 45 days.

Call them twice a week.

So I called the RCMP just now. Spoke to a nice lady. I've called them 3 times so far, and every time the person I spoke to was nice and helpful, I can't stress that enough.

The lady told me that my PAL/RPAL application is in progress, that there is nothing missing, and they have sent my picture for scanning. She said it can take over a week to get the picture scan done.

I asked if my references could call in, and the lady explained that this is no longer required. She said that once the application is sent to the Ontario CFO (after the picture scan is done), they may call my references, if they feel the need to do so. She said to call back in a week for an update.

The way I understand this process is that the RCMP just receives your application, checks for completeness, takes your money, scans the picture, then sends the whole package to the provincial CFO for review and approval. Why the CFO needs to approve this and not directly the RCMP, I'm not sure why. The Canadian Firearms Program, the safety training and PAL process is a federal mandate by law, so I don't really understand why it has to go the provincial level for approval.

My application process so far (Ontario) :

CFSC/CRFSC course : March 21-22
Stamped test results received from FSESO :3 weeks later
PAL/RPAL application sent to RCMP Miramichi : April 23rd
Application received in Miramichi : April 25th (Day 1)
RCMP charges $80 on my credit card : June 4th (Day 40)
Application appears on the RCMP website (in progress) : June 4th
June 6th (Day 42) : Informed that application in complete and picture has been sent for scanning. It will then be forwarded to CFO for approval. Told to call back in a week.

So thats mean the timelines depends on CFO, not on RCMP. Continue waiting......

Absolutely. The way I see it, the RCMP in Miramichi just does the admin work of checking for completeness, compiling files, payment and scanning.

The CFO does the review, reference checks and approval.

Why this process has to involve two agencies at federal and provincial levels is beyond my comprehension.

My CFO has had the paperwork on his desk for 99 days now. That’s after it took 50 days to get to him.

Also like above, everyone I’ve spoken to through this process has been very polite and was helpful so far. Including my CFO officer. Which I know he’s been away from the office a bit the last month or so. Which I can’t even be upset about cause we all get holidays and anyone knows that workload can pile up right before holidays. Unfortunately once you’re assigned a CFO, they must be the one to complete it once they start it. So in some cases, we may be waiting out the application while they take holidays.

Sask. only Yes was a divorce but she also signed off on everything. She had no concerns with this as I’ve been licensed since before we met.
