GOC'ers

We discovered a large botnet attack coming from Singapore was the cause of the slowness over the last 7 days.

We have now identified that attack vector and have put rules in place in several layers to block that entire subnet an have generally tightened up perimeter security.

You should see the site speed up to normal and perhaps better than prior to the attack.

We are also investigating a new VPS (Virtual Private Sever) upgrade (not a code upgrade) to add some operational buffer if this happens again.

Thanks everyone for their patience as we sorted this out!

Thanks for bringing closure to this. Some of us are regulars & would like to know what's going on.

The site is a bit faster than usual.

Hmm. Why would a botnet attack this relatively small, backwater site? Politics?

Singapore ???
It kind of make sense I guess ...
- fast and cheap Internet service like 1 Gbps up/down for like $50, and most are moving to 2Gbps
- a fairly rich and educated population so plenty of IoT stuff at home to infect with botnet

I wonder why GOC was targeted ? Or maybe the it was the hosting service that was the target ?

I'm guessing that it wasn't specifically GOC was targeted, but as you said, maybe the hosting service, or maybe one of the IP's along the way.

Would love to get specific technical details if Telos is ok with that. My nerdy potato would like to know.

Are we going to be able to post directly from our phone/computer again eventually, or is that option gone?
(I really like that feature)

You will have nothing and you will be happy. Has a catchy ring, doesn't it?
