I think what I'm about to suggest would be a good addition to this forum. I got the idea from another forum I frequented back in the day. It's called a "rep" system and from my somewhat experienced knowledge of forums it looks like that forum is the same "code" so to speak, I think vBulletin so it should be an easy thing to implement.

So people on that forum just like this one had post count and trader rating next to their username, they also had "rep". Rep isn't trader ratting and it's not "likes" either. People give you "Rep" when you give a very educated post, you make a guide or a whole thread explaining something very in-depth. The system helps identify members who actually know what they're talking about vs ones that just talk a lot. Without a rep system "reputation" seems to become synonymous with post count for some, except post count can mean very little if the user simply artificially inflates it by posting random stuff or comments that are of non-technical/factual information type. Users with good rep to post ratio are usually indicative of knowledge and "solid" status within the community.

Because rep becomes a thing that you want to have associated with your online persona, it encourages members with knowledge to share with others. There are plenty of members with knowledge yet they keep it to themselves in a nihilistic mindset fearing that their educational post taking a couple hours to craft might get drowned out in all the noise of typical non-nonsensical responses and internet fanboy hoopla. On this other board I frequented that was the end result, members were more motivated to post educational/informative information due to the reward of getting "rep". It also helped people stay on topic when somebody asked a question and have the members post something pertinent to the discussion.


So for example if I understand ballistics/trajectory, the importance of zeros and how to pick the right one I would post a whole thread outlining the basics and why such thing is so important with FACTUAL information backing me up. Make a guide so to speak and if members found my thread to be factual and informative they could give me "rep".

This isn't 'there' and I don't think there has been much of that going on here.
The only reward that we've needed here has been the satisfaction of helping others out. If someone wasn't willing to do it before, I doubt a gold star is going to sway them.

Stick around and pay attention to what people have to say and pretty soon you get a good idea of who knows their stuff. We've got a very diverse crowd here, there probably aren't too many subjects that there isn't someone that has a good bit of knowledge on. Sometimes it's the guys that have 30 posts that can tell you the minutiae of a subject, but they likely wouldn't have much of a 'rep'.

Rep won't help that here. People already get drowned by a few that will 'put you in place' if you don't 100% agree with them. It's poisonous for any forum and discourages people from engaging.
 
I like the rep system on the ford ranger forum I sometimes visit, and I was thinking the same thing that it'd be good here.
 
I think people on forums are already fond of assuming someone with a low post count knows nothing. Why add another dimension that will negate the contributions of new or seldom active members? I'm not saying it's a given, but it happens often enough that I would be hesitant. Think about how people on CGN love to mock different voices by pointing to their low post count/join date/trader rating. Like somehow life starts when you join a forum.

As they say: just cause you're old, it don't make you smart.

It happens here too. At risk of derailing this thread, it seems to be a trend in GOC for members to ridicule CGN. It's getting old. Both forums have their place. <rant over>
 
A few of the forums I frequent have had said rep system hijacked for the true "who's cooler than you" factor, and instead of gaining rep for informative posts, it's for who can troll the best, or be the biggest jackass.

They would get rep. Guy with 30 posts and 1 rep vs guy with 10,000 posts and 10 reps, it's not a perfect system but it helps identify members who have a better good info : post ratio. A gold star did sway me on a couple other forums, I made more "guides" about the things I knew about and some became stickys, not just brief post but page long guides that broke everything down, showed pictures, had everything formatted all nice.

I'd say a weak spot with this place compared to the other Canadian firearms forum right now is knowledge. I've heard quite a few gun myths that have been debunk years ago repeated as fact by quite a few people.

That's the thing, a member with low post count yet high reps means (or at least gives good indication) that whenever they talk, it's meaningful and pertinent. It's not a perfect system but it helps rather that having to sift through their personal posts, or go by their post count. The latter isn't a good indicator but people still look at it and sometimes it somewhat holds true.

Honestly, once you discover just how many scams CGN has run you can't do anything but laugh at them. Enabling shilling, censorship of those exposing their scams, hypocrisy on certain issues, willfully handing over data to the feds that gets people arrested, members who run the site violating ITAR themselves all while reporting their own members, etc... I don't think they have a place at all.

I have seen on a few forums where they should have negative system also. There is a saying about taking what you need from a conversation and leaving the rest behind. Works on forums also.
