website slow

Ok guys, I've recruited one of my best potatoes to help with the website issues.

He/Him is very skilled. After spending the last 3 weeks in my Speedo, he/him was happy to get a bath and get to work.

The old dig about who is slower, your taxidermist, your gunsmith or your butcher...getting mighty close to adding "GOC" to that list of irritants.

Thanks RB...after the last week of delays I wasn't sticking around to get that video to display properly.

It has been a week of "get it right the first time."

When I post to the laugh thread this week, I pause before pushing the POST QUICK REPLY button to ensure I haven't made any bbcode grammatical mistakes. Because EDIT then SAVE takes forever.

When posting videos this week, I no longer use the otherwise convenient INSERT VIDEO button. I type the [ VIDEO ] tags manually.

For youtube videos, it used to be that with 'shorts' you could right-mouse-button and get a usable link, but for the past month they've been giving the shorts useless links with that. The shorts link syntax doesn't work with bbcode. So I edit them manually to change
  • SHORTS LINK : http s://www.you tube.com/shorts/yqzJM4euoys
  • TRADITIONAL LINK : http s://www.you tube.com/watch?v=yqzJM4euoys

Any post that takes me longer than 60 seconds to type, I copy/paste into notepad before POST QUICK REPLY.

I haven't had many posts disappear, but about 3 have appeared to be posted but an hour later they're gone (possibly a server crash/reboot).

Why is it now that some posts you can like and others not?

Also why do some threads time out and others seem okay?

I'm going to bring up an ongoing concern that others have also brought up - multiple times.

I logged in at 0836 MT July 31...6 members and 390 "guests". Onesies and twosies on various forum subjects but I noted these oddities (odd to me):

Greetings (12 viewing)
Canadian Firearm News (27 viewing)
Non-Firearm Politics (40 viewing)
News and Headlines (66 viewing)
Photo and Video (50 viewing)
Hobbies and Rec (potentially containing person information) (19 viewing)
General Firearms Discussion (37 viewing)

Throughout this site there are conversations linking locations, activities and members together. This site is potentially being mined for information on it's members which could include pics of your home, workplace (job description or location) pics of your personal property and friends or family by thieves or thieves in government uniforms (I'm talking to you, High River clowns). Don't throw it back at me that this is a public forum, and to govern myself accordingly. This isn't FB or some other social media - this is a gun site, frequented by gun owners owning, handling and using a highly regulated item with very punitive consequences. We should expect a higher level of care with our personal information to prevent it's unauthorized or unintentional release. Who is being hurt by requiring membership to be able to view the content of this site? Who's interests are being served by leaving the door part way open?

I reiterate the concerns of previous complainants - lock the site down!

Agreed 100%

9:05AM Pacific, and every thread I clicked on came up right away.

Back to slow again and I needed to reload this page 3 times and deal with two of these below before a "like This" got registered.

This should be an embarrassment to those controlling this website.

I was cruising through the same time as stevebc and noted that the speed had improved but then I tried posting some funnies to test and it slowed right down. A couple had to be uploaded twice before appearing.

It's an improvement in the sense that the car only has one flat tire now instead of three.

I assume they're relying on those numbers of visitors to justify charging for advertising.

I like it here; I post more here than anywhere else on the internet. But I don't really understand what is going on since the change in ownership. Awndry had a lot of good points about what could be done better.
It's pretty obvious that the mods are the only ones who give a shit about this place, and kudos to them, as (I believe) that is what is keeping this place alive.
Maybe we should see if cgn will make a category for GOC expats? Then we could still compare the size of our potatoes, discuss chainsaws, bash trudeau, oogle whatever blacksmithden and Dilligaf are building, and ignore harbl's posts. (And every so often talk guns)

I wonder how many people will soon stop bothering to post here because of the slow load times and often failure to even load?

You would think the owner of this website would be worried about losing even more advertisers and members here as they realise the crappy connection issues are not being dealt with?

Funny how no recent updates on how they are working to resolve the issues and a ETA on a resolution, just silence and hoping everybody will sheepishly put up with the crappy service.

It is almost a week straight now of this on again off again subpar performance.

And Beavers IT potato is not making it any better either!

Plus I have a extremely fast 1.5gb internet fibre optic internet connection that for any other website gives me basically zero load time!

Just trying to upload these two below speed test pics took me multiple try's and 2 timing outs and reloads plus 4 minutes to post.

Closing this thread, we all know the website is slow and until its fixed please stop posting about it.
Note the people working on the issue (aside from the host which is paid) are volunteers, so give us some slack.
